(NewsCore) – LOS ANGELES — While Sunday night’s Oscar winners walk away with a statuette and widespread acclaim, the beaten nominees will be rewarded with a $75,000 goodie bag so luxurious it might even outweigh the pangs of defeat.
The nominees — the unofficial “losers” of the night — can fly off Monday to a luxury hotel in Connecticut or spend a vacation in the Maldives, all while dressed in some of Tinseltown’s highest-priced clothes and exclusive jewelry.
And if that does not substitute the sense of loss after the Hollywood ceremony, there is always “lots of chocolate” for the stars to gorge in consolation.
The company that supplies the bags, which has no official links to the Academy, said the gifts were “meant to titillate and indulge those who may have everything but still enjoy experiencing one of the industry’s greatest rewards: swag.”
“Let’s face it, you’re going to need that after losing, although technically you’re gaining,” said Distinctive Assets spokeswoman Dina Rezvanipour.
Gifting fell foul of the recession, with bankable stars reluctant to be seen as greedy in a time of austerity. But the modesty appears to have passed — albeit too soon, according to some observers.
“Celebrities didn’t want to be seen as greedy, and companies didn’t want to give anything away, but we’re coming out of that,” one Hollywood events specialist said. “Having said that, I know a lot of us are shocked to see privileged celebrities helping themselves in the way they do.”
